It is in the tourist city of Marrakech in Morocco that the American business and media group Bloomberg has chosen to organise its very first Gateway Africa Conference. The event, which will be held on 13 and 14 June 2023, will focus on the planet’s current economic challenges, in particular global climate action in favour of Africa, which is on the front line of extreme weather phenomena without necessarily being prepared for them.
According to Michael Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies and the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions, the meeting will bring together business and political leaders and representatives of international organisations to discuss “five pillars” including sustainable finance, responsible trade, territorial security and climate resilience.
“Bloomberg is one of the most influential and recognised names in business and media, so it is fantastic that Bloomberg’s new economy community is coming together in the Kingdom of Morocco to discuss issues that affect people in Africa and around the world, including climate change,” said Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard, a founding member of the Gateway Africa Conference Advisory Board.
During two days, the event will also highlight the progress made in terms of ecological transition which has enabled Morocco in 2023 to rank 7th ahead of Algeria, South Africa and Egypt in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI). In recent years, the Cherifian kingdom has focused on energy efficiency to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that cause global warming.
