While climate hazards are holding back sustainable development in Africa, the French Development Agency (AFD) will finance several initiatives in 2024 that could accelerate the ecological transition on the continent.
In response to natural disasters and the high cost of living around the world, the French Development Agency (AFD) is launching a call for expressions of interest for civil society organizations (CSOs) working to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 83 countries listed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Development Assistance Committee.
A total of 45 African countries are eligible, including Burkina Faso, Liberia, Togo, Ghana, Nigeria and Benin for West Africa. There are also Angola and the Central African Republic (CAR) for Central Africa, Zambia, Burundi, Eritrea, Madagascar and Tanzania for East Africa, and Lesotho and Eswatini for Southern Africa. North Africa, which is plagued by extreme heat, is also concerned by this initiative through the CSOs of Sudan, Algeria and Tunisia.
The funding provided by AFD from 2024 will benefit initiatives focusing on health and well-being (MDG3), gender equality (MDG5), climate resilience (MDG13) and biodiversity protection (MDG15). The call for projects, which closes on the evening of May 15, 2023, is implemented in partnership with the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs with the aim of accelerating the ecological transition on the continent.

The subject is a pressing concern, particularly south of the Sahara, where the economic consequences of the war in Ukraine are exacerbating the dual food and energy crisis. It is in this context that the International Organization of La Francophonie (IOF) has launched its fourth call for projects in 2022 to support non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and private research institutes that advocate for sustainable development in its member countries including Niger and Mauritania. This support includes grants ranging from €5,000 to €20,000, as well as presentation opportunities at international events.
