Companies contributing to electrification via off-grid systems have the opportunity to obtain a grant from the US African Development Foundation (USADF). The US government agency has just launched a call for proposals under the Off-Grid Energy Challenge. This initiative aims to increase electricity generation for unserved/underserved African communities through sustainable business model solutions.
The USADF Off-Grid Energy Challenge is open only to private companies and African-owned or -led organisations. The call for expressions of interest is being issued in Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
The call for proposals is open until 12 February 2023. Companies have the opportunity to receive a grant of $250,000 from USADF. This initiative is in line with the United States of America’s initiatives to support the electrification of Africa. This is also the case of Power Africa launched under the administration of former US President Barack Obama in 2013.
As part of this initiative implemented by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Health Electrification and Telecommunications Alliance (HETA) was launched a few weeks ago with the aim of providing access to electricity to at least 10 000 health centres in Africa.
