The 11th edition of the Orange Summer Challenge is launched. For this edition, the competition will support young students from six countries, five of which are in Africa, in launching green start-ups, specialising in plastic waste management. The competition concerns young people from Ivory Coast, Senegal, Cameroon, Tunisia and Ethiopia.
In the selected countries, plastic waste pollution has reached worrying proportions. The Orange Digital Center, which is organising the competition, will select the best green projects. Initially, the project leaders will receive training and mentoring from both local and international coaches. “These students will also benefit from the know-how of experts from the training centre for digital professions (Orange Digital Academy) for the software part and experts from the FabLab (workshop providing the public with computer-assisted object manufacturing tools) for the hardware part,” says Orange. The cosmetics company Sisley and the French company Paprec, which specialises in the collection and recycling of industrial and household waste, are supporting Orange’s initiative.

The four best projects proposed by the students will be unveiled in September 2021. The winners will receive, in addition to technical support, envelopes of between 4 million CFA francs (nearly 6,100 euros) and 750,000 CFA francs (over 1,143 euros) to implement their projects. And the other participants received prizes worth a total of 2 million CFA francs (over 3,000 euros). “We are working to create more opportunities for young students so that everyone can contribute to the emergence of the African continent, and Ivory Coast in particular,” said Habib Bamba, Director of Transformation, Digital and Media at Orange Ivory Coast.
