In Algeria, the National company for the construction of railway materials and equipment (FERROVIAL) has been awarded a contract to manufacture incinerators for special and hazardous waste for the holding company Algeria Chemical Specialities (ACS). The group wants to reduce the environmental impact of its subsidiaries in Algeria.

The partnership agreement was signed on 1 February 2023 between the managing director of the holding company Algeria Chemical Specialities (ACS), Samir Yahaw, and Bouyoussef Lamri, the managing director of the National company for the construction of railway materials and equipment (FERROVIAL) based in Annaba, Algeria. The agreement covers the manufacture and installation of special and hazardous waste incineration plants.

The FERROVIAL contract will be carried out in several phases. Initially, the Algerian group will manufacture a special and hazardous waste incineration plant for 3R-Santé, one of ACS’s subsidiaries specialising in the management and treatment of hazardous waste. Several other incineration plants will be manufactured and installed during the subsequent phases of the project. ACS manages a heterogeneous portfolio of four companies, including National glass and abrasives company (ENAVA), Paper and Pulp Industrial Group (GIPEC), National Company of Detergents and Maintenance Products (ENAD) and Plastics and Rubber Industrial Group (ENPC).

ACS also manages six public economic enterprises (EPE) in the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors, including 3R-Santé. The other EPEs are the National Painting Company (ENAP), Tonic industrie, the National Society of Chemical Industries (DIPROCHIM), the Public company for the manufacture and marketing of medical devices (SOCOTHYD) and the National retail drug distribution company (ENDIMED), making a total of 32 companies in Algeria.

The reorganisation project will also support the economic integration strategy of the Algerian Ministry of Industry through the policy of complementarity between economic groups. The agreement also covers the evaluation and rehabilitation of existing incineration plants, given that this waste disposal process has consequences for the environment and people’s health.

For its part, ACS and its subsidiaries will make their technical expertise and advisors in this field available to the industrial group FERROVIAL. The holding company will assist FERROVIAL in obtaining approval from the competent authorities.
