In Algeria, the village of Ighil Takdhibine in the southern region of Kabylia has won the competition for the cleanest locality in the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou. For a decade, this initiative has been supporting local efforts to manage waste and natural heritage.

With its mountainous terrain covered with olive trees, fig trees and other plant species, Ighil Takdhibine in Algeria has been designated “cleanest locality” in the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou in 2022. The local authorities received a prize of 7 million Algerian dirhams (more than 50,000 euros) in this competition, which has been organised since 2006 by Algeria’s Popular Assembly of the Wilaya (APW).

This award will contribute to the preservation of the natural environment and the sustainable management of household waste in Ighil Takdhibine with a view to improving the living environment of around 1,200 inhabitants. Several other villages in the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou were also awarded prizes, including Ait Mimoun (2nd), Ait Atssou (4th), Agnouni Bouragh (6th) and Ifnayen (9th). “The initiative also creates a great dynamic of living together throughout the territory,” says Djilali Doumi, the governor (wali) of Tizi Ouzou.

In Algeria, other cities have also included cleanliness in their priority actions. This is the case in particular in the capital Algiers, where the municipal authorities decided in July 2022 to build a public garden in place of the Oued S’mar landfill, which had reached saturation point. The project, which also aims to promote ecotourism, will allow for the installation of 350 public benches, twenty wooden canopies, five food shops, as well as an exhibition centre for traditional products in the natural park.

With its 220 44-year-old street lamps, the site will be further illuminated thanks to the energy recovery of 18 million m3 of waste. The Algerian capital authorities have also indicated that they will establish a leachate treatment unit on site with a capacity of 720 m3 per day as well as an irrigation system for watering trees covering a total area of 20 hectares. The system includes two water tanks of 150 m3 each with the drilling of a 400-metre deep well.
