Businesses and private individuals should soon be able to track the collection, transport and treatment of their solid waste in Algeria in real time, thanks to the MyGeocycle platform launched by French company Geocycle on 14 July 2024.

This initiative by Geocycle, which specialises in waste management, is in line with the Algerian government’s vision of using technology to modernise waste management in the North African country using advanced digital solutions. “Current waste management in Algeria faces a number of challenges and obstacles that have a negative impact on the country’s citizens, economy and environment”, says the Algerian Ministry of the Environment and Renewable Energies in the National Strategy for the Integrated Management and Recovery of Waste by 2035 (SNGID 2035), which aims, among other things, to reduce household and similar waste by 10% by 2035, to recover 47% of household and similar waste, 47% of special waste and 60% of inert waste.

Optimising operations for businesses

By enabling real-time monitoring and management, MyGeocycle will also improve operational efficiency, helping to reduce costs and minimise the environmental impact of this waste.“By facilitating access to information and automating processes, this platform helps companies comply with environmental regulations while optimising their operations,” says Geocycle, which also promotes sustainable and innovative practices in solid waste management.

In Algeria, the French company will be able to draw on the study of citizens’ behaviour towards waste, recently carried out by the country’s National Waste Agency (AND), to use its digital platform to raise awareness of the need to adopt eco-responsible solid waste management practices.
