In Cameroon, the government is launching a programme to rehabilitate 350 Scanwater stations. As part of this project, the Cameroonian Minister of Water and Energy Gaston Eloundou Essomba inaugurated the water collection centre of the Ndjoré Village, located in the commune of Mbandjock, Upper Sanaga division, on February 26, 2020.
“The Ndjoré station will contribute to the well-being of the population by replacing traditional wells. For 40 years, the government has been developing the Scanwater project, which has consisted of building 350 such stations throughout the country. Unfortunately they did not function optimally because there was a problem with maintenance and energy sources. These stations ran on diesel and diesel was expensive,” explains Minister Gaston Eloundou Essomba of Water and Energy.
Rehabilitation work on the water catchment plant in the Ndjoré village took two months. The rehabilitated structure consists of a borehole. It is equipped with a submersible pump for water collection. The Ndjoré station also consists of a water treatment plant, a 25 m³ reservoir, five standpipes and a solar off-grid electrical system.
The Ndjoré station now supplies more than 1,875 people, including the village’s medical staff. The rehabilitation of Ndjoré’s water catchment centre was financed to the tune of more than 100 million CFA francs (over €152,000) by the China Machinery Corporation, a subsidiary of China’s state-owned Sinomach.
