More news on the project to use the Kariari dam to supply people with drinking water. On 21 June 2023, Chad’s Ministry of Water and Sanitation launched a call for expressions of interest for the construction of new facilities ancillary to the dam, which has a storage capacity of 12 million m3. These include a raw water pumping plant and a drinking water treatment plant.

Under its contract, the winning company will also build raw water and drinking water transport networks, as well as a drinking water distribution network. The aim is to supply drinking water to the localities around Amdjarass, in the province of Ennedi-Est. The Chadian province has the lowest rate of access to water in Central Africa (11%), according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Companies interested in carrying out this project can apply by 27 July 2023 at the latest. The construction of the facilities ancillary to the Kariari dam will be financed from its own funds by the government of the Republic of Chad, which aims to increase drinking water coverage in the country to 100% by 2030, compared with 53% in 2021, according to the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The launch of this call for tenders comes around two years after the announcement of the project to operate the Kariari dam to supply drinking water to the localities around Amdjarass in Chad, on 21 August 2021. In its development phase, the project will also improve sanitation and hygiene, two water-related services.
