Cairo-based Elsewedy Electric Environmental Solutions will implement the Kafr Abu Zohr wastewater treatment plant project in the governorate of Alexandria, under an agreement signed recently with Egypt’s Construction Authority for Drinking Water and Wastewater (CAPW). The contract covers the design, supply of equipment, installation, civil engineering works and turnkey commissioning of the wastewater treatment plant.
The plant will treat 60,000 m3 of effluent produced in the Alexandria governorate every day, before returning it to the natural environment. The aim of this project is to protect the environment, particularly freshwater resources, which are currently polluted by wastewater, posing risks to aquatic biodiversity and human health.
Investment in wastewater treatment
Elsewedy Electric has won the contract for the Kafr Abu Zohr wastewater treatment plant, less than three years after signing the contract for the Houd Negaih wastewater treatment plant in the governorate of Al Sharkia, in north-east Egypt. Built as part of the Sustainable Rural Sanitation Services Programme (SRSSP), this plant will have a capacity of 6,000 m3 per day when commissioned. Through the SRSSP, the Egyptian government’s overall aim is to improve liquid sanitation in 769 villages, spread across seven of the 26 governorates in the country of the pharaohs.

Founded in 1938 by the Elsewedy family with the primary mission of supplying energy solutions, the Egyptian company has since proved itself in this sector, but not only. The company has also made a name for itself in the water and wastewater sector, with major contracts spread across its 33 subsidiaries and 30 production units.
In addition to the Kafr Abu Zohr and Houd Negaih wastewater treatment plants, Elsewedy Electric was also chosen in July 2023 to build a water pump manufacturing centre in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone). Its subsidiary Elsewedy Industrial Development will implement this contract.
