The National Rural Village Development Project in Egypt is being implemented in the governorate of Suhag. In this area in Upper Egypt, the project will create 61 biogas units, including 57 units to convert household waste, three for agricultural schools and a mobile educational unit to be installed at Suhag University. Bioenergy for Sustainable Rural Development is piloting the project in the governorate. On June 27th, 2021, the company signed a 1.5 million Egyptian pound (over $95,700) financing agreement with the National Bank of Kuwait.
Bioenergy will recruit companies to implement the green project in Suhag governorate. They will use the grant from the National Bank of Kuwait to carry out the drilling and site preparation work for the fermentation of organic waste. “These units aim to provide a new, secure and continuous source of renewable energy for domestic consumption and to improve the health and environmental conditions of villages through waste disposal. The facilities will also be used to produce an element-rich organic fertiliser that will improve soil properties,” says Yasmine Fouad, Egypt’s Minister of the Environment.
Similar project produces biogas in Minya
Turning organic waste into biogas in the governorate of Suhag will reduce the use of fossil fuels. These energies emit carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas that is largely responsible for climate change.

Bioenergy will also provide technical supervision of the green energy project in Suhag. The initiative follows the successful experience in the governorate of Minya in Upper Egypt. Today, the governorate has 60 biogas units in different villages. “Such initiatives bring Egypt closer to its 2030 target. Namely, improving the quality of life of the Egyptian citizen through an economical and sustainable energy source and supporting the efforts of Implementing the Presidential initiative ′′ a dignified life ′′ for all Egyptians,” says Yasmine Fouad, the Egyptian Minister of Environment.
