More news on the “Industria Sokhna” project, which aims to transform the Ain Sokhna port area in Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) into a 1.7 million m2 “world-class Egyptian commercial hub”. ElSewedy Industrial Development, the driving force behind the project, has appointed Osaka, Japan-based pumping solutions provider Torishima to build a centre for the assembly, manufacture, supply and maintenance of large water pumps. These installations will be used in sewage treatment plants and seawater desalination plants for industrial and civil purposes in Ain Sokhna.

“We look forward to working in partnership with major end-users in the water, wastewater, irrigation and power sectors to improve the reliability of the large pumps installed and ensure that Egypt has the most reliable and efficient pumps in North Africa,” enthuses Alister Flett, Torishima Group’s Chief Operating Officer in Japan. The pumping solutions provider will build the centre on a 30,000 m2 plot of land provided by the Cairo-based subsidiary of Elsewedy Electric.

Torishima has a budget of $5 million to finance the work. “This investment will be increased over the next five years”, says SCZone. The funds will also be used to rehabilitate and increase the efficiency of motors and pumps belonging to the Egyptian government, which have been out of service for years in many industries.

In addition to improving water supply in a context of drought, the construction of the centre for the assembly, manufacture, supply and maintenance of large water pumps will create more than 100 local jobs. Torishima also plans to create a local spare parts industry to meet the needs of the Egyptian market.
