In Gabon, the government is providing the councils of Greater Libreville with new equipment for the collection of household waste. The equipment consists of 21 skips and 525 refuse bins.
The Gabonese government is improving sanitation services in Grand-Libreville. On 5 August 2022, the Gabonese Minister of the Interior, Lambert-Noël Matha, took delivery of 21 skips and 525 refuse bins for the sorting and collection of household waste. In addition to the operational capacities of the four councils of Grand-Libreville, such as Owendo, Akanda, Ntoum and Pointe Denis, the efficiency of Clean Africa will also be reinforced. The public company is responsible for collecting waste in these targeted areas while awaiting the implementation of the Gabonese government’s decision to definitively decentralise the collection of household waste in the country.

The new skips have a storage capacity of 10,000 litres and the refuse bins have capacities of between 110,000 and 770,000 litres. For Gabonese authority Lambert-Noël Matha, this is the first step in a long process that will eventually lead to the acquisition of equipment for the transport and treatment of household waste in Greater Libreville, particularly in biogas.
For sustainable municipalities
The recycling of household waste will also enable the production of fertiliser for agriculture. Greater Libreville has to deal on a daily basis with uncontrolled landfills that make life difficult for its 980,000 inhabitants, i.e. half of the Gabonese population.
The aim is to make the municipalities of Greater Libreville sustainable and pleasant to live in, with a positive impact on human and environmental health. The Gabonese authorities have also made the population aware of the times when rubbish can be deposited in the skips, i.e. between 6 and 8 p.m., to enable the rubbish collection companies to provide logistical support for the collection.
