After the start of construction work on a solid waste treatment plant in Sefwi Wiawso, in the North-West region, in September 2020, the Ghanaian government decided to do the same in Sharigu in the Upper East region. The future plant will be built on 100 hectares made available by the municipality of Sharigu. It will be managed by Zoomlion, the company that provides the public waste management service in several cities in this West African country.
Construction work on the waste treatment unit began on October 8th, 2020. The plant will be equipped with facilities for sorting and recycling solid waste and composting organic waste. It will be capable of processing 200 tonnes of waste per day in the Upper East region. “The Upper East generates 782 tonnes of solid waste per day. This is a very good source of raw materials for the composting and recycling plant that will be built in the region,” says Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Ghana’s Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources.
The construction of the solid waste treatment plant is expected to create 280 direct and indirect jobs in the Upper East region. The implementation of the project is being financed to the tune of €15 million (from 103 million Ghanaian cedis) by the Ghanaian treasury. The government plans to commission the facility in four months, i.e. in February 2021.
