With the onset of the dry season in western Ghana, the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), a public utility, will ration water supply in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis due to low water levels at the treatment plant. This is a temporary solution until the raw water supply situation improves, said Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, GWCL’s director of communications, in charge of the Central and Western regions.
In this context, the public company has established a timetable for the distribution of the resource to supply homes and structures during this undetermined period. In this document, each locality is divided according to specific days of the week.
Effiakuma, Effia, Bankyease, Sawmill, Lagos Town, Airport Ridge, Dupaul, Apowa, New Amanful, Funko and West Tanokrom areas will receive water on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Anaji, West Line and West Anaji Residential Area will be supplied every Wednesday, which is only once a week due to their pumping lines being automatically connected to other communities when they are served.
The other days of the week are reserved for Beach Road, Chapel Hill, Dixcove Hill, Esikafuo Ambantem (1,2 and 3), Kintampo Road, Cape Coast Road, Port Quarters, Accra Road, Amonoo and Bekwai roads and New Takoradi.
Government’s strategy to address water needs
Ghana has a population of more than 31.7 million, including 3 million people who still lack access to quality drinking water, according to a 2018 report by the French company Veolia. In mid-2021, the West African country’s government took a step toward achieving universal drinking water coverage by endowing the country’s Water Resources Commission with a 15-member board.
