Just four months after the launch of its “Green Terminal” label, the operator Bolloré Ports has certified its first container terminal. The terminal is Meridian Port Services (MPS) Terminal 3, in the port of Tema, Ghana. The certification was granted on September 15th, 2021 to Mohamed Samara, the general manager of MPS. It is a joint venture between APM Terminals and Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and Bolloré Transport & Logistics, the subsidiary of the Bolloré Group.
Bolloré Ports sought the expertise of Bureau Veritas, the global certification expert, to conduct annual audits to assess environmental performance and issue certificates of compliance to MPS.
What is the 86% score worth?
During the audit, MPS’s facilities, equipment, electricity consumption and operating process were scrutinised. In the end, the joint venture was awarded two stars in the “Green Terminal” assessment with a score of 86.58%.
With this distinction, MPS is ahead of all port terminals operated by the Bolloré Group in Africa, Asia and America in terms of sustainability. “The ranking is governed by the audited compliance levels of more than 250 key performance indicators (KPIs) and administered by 4 rating levels, with an entry at the “no star” level for a score above 50% and “one star” for a score above 65%, then “two stars” for a score above 80% and finally “three stars” for a score above 90%,” explains Christian Devaux, Bolloré Ports’ Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) Director. The certification of MPS Terminal 3 as a “green terminal” also rewards the commitment of the Terminal’s management and shareholders to environmental preservation.
