Work on the extension of the drinking water supply system in Sunyani, the regional capital of Bono in Ghana, will begin in the next few months with a delay of about one year. This was announced recently by Francis Agyei-Boateng, the General Manager of Project Planning and Development of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL). According to him, the delay was caused by the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the project which is yet to be approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The project was originally scheduled to start at the end of July 2022 with earthworks at the GWCL railhead in Abesim, Sunyani Municipality. The main earthworks are therefore expected to start this year. The LR Group, an Israeli company specialising in the implementation of development projects, will continue with the first phase of the project under the agreement signed in November 2022 with GWCL.
Strengthening the drinking water supply by 2025
LR Group will construct a water intake that will feed a drinking water plant with a capacity of 55,000 m3 per day. The future facility will also be equipped with at-grade and elevated tanks with a total capacity of approximately 16,500 m3.
The project also includes the construction of two booster stations and standpipes, the laying of 93 km of transmission pipes, the provision of 10,000 household meters, the construction of laboratories and chemical storage buildings, and the construction of a power line to supply the entire facility.

The future drinking water facilities will be delivered in November 2025, from the start date of the works. In addition to the Sunyani Municipality, the project will improve service to the residents of Chiraa, Fiapre, Nsoatre, Mantukwa, Dumasua, Odomase, Kwatire and some of the neighbouring communities in the Sunyani West Municipality. The communities of Tanoso, Techire, Yamfo, Susuanso, Adrobaa, Afrisipakrom and surrounding communities in the municipality of Tano North in the Ahafo region will also benefit from the project. 133.3 million will be provided by the Ghanaian central government to finance the extension works.
