“Tailor-made waste management awareness programmes”. This is Zoomlion’s new communication strategy to improve waste management in Ghana. The Jospong Group subsidiary has signed an agreement with the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) to implement the project.
While Zoomlion will continue its waste management mission in Ghanaian cities, GCGL will raise awareness of good practices through various programmes broadcast on its news channels. Ghana generates 5 million tonnes of waste per year. According to a study (2017) conducted by the Ghanaian Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, 60% of this waste could be transformed into organic waste, while 80% could be recycled into other products.
The introduction of a bonus system
Zoomlion will put 100 refuse trucks into service to speed up waste collection in Ghana’s cities. “GCGL will monitor and reward the regional and district capitals and the cleanest communities,” says Joseph Siaw Agyepong, the executive chairman of the Jospong Group. District waste management office staff will be trained to enhance their operational capabilities.

Zoomlion and GCGL already have hundreds of sanitation clubs in primary and secondary schools that regularly campaign against poor waste management practices. The two partners are planning further initiatives for the expansion of sanitation clubs in schools, dialogue between regions, districts and communities, and education of drivers’ unions. These include special campaigns at toll booths, promotion of the use of litter bins, awareness raising within faith-based organisations, and the use of various forms of advertising and publications on a daily basis.
The collaboration between Zoomlion and Graphic Communications Group will last 12 months.
