The new electricity grid extension project, which was inaugurated on the 5th of October 2019 by the Ivorian Prime Minister, Amadou Gon Coulibaly, will serve nearly 100,000 people in eight districts of the city of Guiglo. On site, some 1700 new poles will be set up on both sides of the city. In the same vein, the engineers will unroll 73 kilometres of cables and install 11 high and low voltage distribution stations. The first project deliverables will be available in June 2020. However, according to the Prime Minister, the first phase could already be completed in some areas of Guiglo by the end of 2019.
This project reinforces the existing system in the city, which consists of 793 public lighting poles and 27 power stations in the city. The works will improve the quality of electricity distribution service and contribute to the city’s industrial development, according to Amidou Traoré, General Manager of Côte d’Ivoire Energy (quoted by Yeclo.com).
The overall cost of the project is estimated at about €1.9 million. It is being implemented as part of the Social Programme of the Government of Ivory Coast, which was designed for the period 2019 to 2020 and has an overall cost of €1.3 billion. Implemented in 2012, this policy has made it possible to electrify 2122 localities in Ivory Coast. Clearly, through this work, the number of electrified localities has increased from 2,818 in 2011 to 4,940 at the end of 2018. Over the same period, the rate of access to electricity increased from 33% to 58%.
