New pipes will drain wastewater in the town of Iten, in Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Kenya. The sewerage project was announced on 21 September 2022 by the local authorities. The North Rift Water Works Development Authority (NRWWA) is responsible for the implementation of the project. The sewerage system, the size of which is not yet known, will channel wastewater (from households, grey water, etc.) to a new treatment plant with a capacity of 6,800 m3 per day.
NRWWA will finance the work on the Iten sewerage system to the tune of 900 million Kenyan shillings, or about $7.5 million. The agency, which falls under the Kenyan Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, is responsible for undertaking the development, maintenance and management of waterworks in four counties in the Rift Valley region. These are Turkana, West Pokot, Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties.
Following the presentation of the Iten sanitation project, NRWWA Director General Edwin Rotich announced similar projects in Kapcherop and Kapsowar. “Feasibility studies are planned before the possible construction of sewage systems in these Kenyan towns,” he said.

The completion of these various projects will bring the government of the Republic of Kenya closer to its goal of increasing the rate of access to sanitation in the East African country to 40% by the end of 2022, compared to 20% currently, according to the Kenyan Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation.
