The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) has finally published the list of companies pre-qualified to develop the Noor Midelt II solar project. Most of these companies, 12 in all, are organised in consortia and are aiming for an installed capacity of 400 MW with storage.

After a wait of around 4 years, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) has published the list of companies pre-qualified for the construction of the Noor Midelt II solar park. Among the independent power producers (IPPs) shortlisted is EDF Renouvelables. The subsidiary of the Électricité de France (EDF) group has joined forces with the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar). These two partners have been chosen to develop the Noor Midelt I solar complex.

For this second phase, MASEN has also chosen Enel Green Power, a subsidiary of the Italian giant Enel, which has formed a consortium with Taqa Morocco, a subsidiary of the Taqa group. Spain’s Iberdrola Renovables International is competing alongside China’s Dongfang Electric International Corporation and Morocco’s Gaia Project. The other consortium is made up of International Power from Belgium and the Moroccan company Navera.

The consortium formed by Cobra Servicios, Communicaciones y Energia and Cobra Instalaciones y Servicios was also selected. The same goes for Saudi Arabian IPP Acwa Power, which is in the race alone. The companies selected at the end of the process will develop, finance, build and operate a 400 MW solar power plant. The park will be equipped with a storage system capable of supplying electricity for at least two hours after sunset.

“The pre-qualification stage reflects the continued deployment of the Noor Plan launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI,” says MASEN. The Moroccan agency has already enabled the development of 4,109 MW of installed clean energy capacity since its creation in 2010. Morocco aims to produce 52% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. According to the National Electricity and Drinking Water Company (Onee), the country currently has an installed capacity of 11,055 MW.
