The efficiency of water and sanitation services in Fez should be enhanced in the next few years. The Moroccan government recently decided to set up a training institute for water, sanitation and environmental professions (IFMEAE) in this city of almost 1.3 million inhabitants, located two hours’ drive from Rabat.
The future institute will have a capacity of 313 students enrolled in initial and continuing training courses, with a particular focus on preserving the water resources still available in Fez and throughout Morocco.

For the record, Fès, like most cities in the Kingdom of Morocco, is affected by drought, which is reflected in the scarcity of water. This vital resource is essential for economic development, with activities such as agriculture and livestock farming.
Support from French Development Agency
Future students at the IFMEAE will also be trained to protect the environment, in particular through the adoption of ecological practices such as the use of renewable energy, the recycling of solid waste and waste water, and the creation of green spaces.
In addition to the areas dedicated to learning, the IFMEAE will have a reception centre, an administrative centre, a teaching support centre, a documentation resource centre, a leisure centre, a medical area, a restaurant, an accommodation centre and outdoor areas.
The Moroccan Ministry of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment and Skills (MIEPEEC), which initiated the creation of this institute, will receive support from the French Development Agency (AFD) to finance all the work, the cost of which is estimated at 105.6 million Moroccan dirhams, or around 9.7 million euros.
