The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Moroccan Sustainable Energy Agency (Masen) will work together to develop and implement renewable energy technology deployment projects in Morocco and selected African countries. The two organisations concluded a cooperation agreement on November 5 during a working meeting in Abu Dhabi (capital of the United Arab Emirates). The objective is to create new opportunities and support the beneficiary countries of this agreement to focus on solar energy in their development strategy.

One of the first benefits of this collaboration is the creation by UNIDO, with Masen’s support, of a platform for the dissemination of renewable energy technologies in all the countries identified as beneficiaries of the cooperation. In addition, both parties will work to develop local production of certain technological tools, a method that will make it possible to make target markets more competitive, while supporting the preservation of the environment. The collaboration will also lead to technology transfer through the deployment of an industrial value chain in Morocco and the sharing of expertise, as well as the transfer of know-how on innovative techniques and practices to selected countries.

The signing of this partnership agreement will enable UNDP to continue the implementation of its “clean, low-carbon energy programme for the world and Africa in particular”. This programme was developed with the aim of reducing poverty and promoting industrial growth through renewable energy. Already in 2017, UNIDO and Masen had signed a partnership initiated between the two parties at COP22 in Marrakech. This collaboration led to the launch of the Vanadium FlowBattery project, which aims to demonstrate the efficiency and stabilisation of power generation.
