Good news for the Régie autonome de distribution d’eau et d’électricité de Chaouia (RADEEC). The Moroccan public company, in charge of managing drinking water and liquid sanitation, has been chosen to operate and maintain the Had Soualem wastewater treatment plant, located in the province of Berrechid, Casablanca-Settat region in Morocco. The related partnership agreement was recently signed with the Millennium Challenge Account-Morocco (MCA-Morocco), a $460.5 million US bilateral development fund managed by the Millennium Challenge Corporation.
The objective is to improve wastewater management in the Casablanca-Settat region. The 9-hectare treatment plant provides tertiary treatment of the effluent, which is then returned to nature, reducing pollution of the immediate environment of the Merzeg River, where wastewater from the Had Soualem industrial zone was previously discharged, and improving the quality of bathing water at Bouazza Beach.
At least 100,000 people will benefit
The Had Soualem wastewater treatment plant, which was recently built by the Tunisian society Water Technologie and commissioned with funding from MCA-Morocco, has a daily capacity of 5,100 m3. The construction of the plant, which now benefits 100,000 people, was carried out thanks to financing of 130 million Moroccan dirhams, or approximately 11.8 million euros. Of this funding, 6.6 million Moroccan dirhams (more than €598,000) came from the Moroccan Ministry of Industry and Trade. The other part of the budget, 123.4 million Moroccan dirhams (almost 11.2 million euros), was financed by the MCA-Morocco.

The Had Soualem wastewater treatment plant also treats wastewater from the new Sahel Lakhyayta industrial zone located in the Had Soualem council. This zone will be developed within the framework of the “pilot sites” component of the “Compact II” cooperation programme, concluded between the government of the Kingdom of Morocco and the government of the United States of America, represented by MCC.
