MOROCCO: the 3rd MedCOP Climate Forum opens on resilience on 22 June in Tangiers

After its second edition in 2016, the Mediterranean Climate Forum "MedCOP Climat" is back on 22 June 2023 in Tangiers, Morocco, with a focus on strengthening regional resilience.

The third Mediterranean Climate Forum “MedCOP Climate” will be held from 22 to 23 June 2023 in Tangiers, Morocco. “At a time when the world is struggling to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change is a challenge that must be taken into account because of the disruption it causes”, says the Tangiers-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, which is organising the event.

A total of 3,000 participants are expected from Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Malta, Algeria, France, Italy, Libya, Mauritania and Tunisia. For two days, they will be discussing eight themes, including sustainable food systems, rational management of water resources and the blue economy, the energy transition, climate migration, decentralised cooperation and, above all, climate financing.

“It should be emphasised that the fight against climate change requires the contribution and commitment of all players, especially local governments, businesses and citizens, who have the levers to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in our societies. However, this transition cannot be achieved without the mobilisation, commitment and strong will of everyone”, says the Fondation maison méditerranéenne du climat (FMMC), which is supporting MedCOP 2023.

The Tangiers meeting is being held against a backdrop of record heatwaves and deadly floods on both shores of the Mediterranean. These hazards, coupled with the war in Ukraine, should be the focus of discussions on the vulnerability of local and regional authorities and the pooling of economic and climate resilience strategies.
