For the 7th edition of the Hassan II Great Water Prize, the Government of Morocco and the World Water Council have set two objectives, one of which is specifically entitled “water security in territories for sustainable development and food security”. Several countries in the world, including Morocco, are facing climate change, which is causing, among other things, water stress. The recently launched prize concerns individuals or groups of individuals, institutions and Moroccan and international organisations.
According to the Moroccan Ministry of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water, proposals must be submitted by December 31st, 2021. The bearer of the best project selected by the organisers of the Hassan II Grand Prize for Water will receive an envelope of 500,000 dollars to develop its activities. The prize will be awarded at a special ceremony, scheduled during the plenary session of the opening of the World Water Forum in March 2022 in Dakar, Senegal.

This year’s prize is significantly higher than the $100,000 awarded in previous editions. This shows the interest of the initiators of the Hassan II Grand Prize in contributing to the improvement of water resource management by financing alternative projects. The competition has been launched every three years since 2002 and has already supported several organisations, including the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the winner of the 2018 edition. The OECD has produced a book entitled “Water for All: OECD Perspectives on Pricing and Financing”, as well as a summary for policy makers around the world.
