A new company is expected to take over the management of the Walvis Bay landfill in Namibia soon. On 20 July 2021, the municipality launched a call for expressions of interest in the project. Proposals will be considered from 27 August 2021.

The successful bidder will operate the Walvis Bay landfill. The selected company will replace Waste Power Generation, which has been in charge of the solid waste management project since 2019. According to the Namibian, the company was not ready to effectively operate the Walvis Bay landfill and withdrew from the project.

The Walvis Bay Municipality’s initiative is expected to help reduce the waste pollution that is increasing in the absence of recycling systems. Currently, the solid waste recycling industry is still in its infancy throughout Namibia. A study by University of Namibia PhD student Tandiwe Mutede on solid waste found that most waste management activities are in the recovery, collection and semi-treatment stages of the recycling chain. But the Namibian government wants to reverse this trend.
