For the first time, the African continent is organising a forum on green growth. The pilot edition will be held from the 26th to the 30th of November 2018 in Kigali, the Rwandan capital. Africa Green Growth 2018 is five days of reflection on the theme “For a green and resilient Africa.” The forum is organised by institutions and organisations working for green growth in Rwanda and Africa. The Rwandan Ministry of the Environment points out that the meeting will allow the sharing of “international best practices and will highlight the importance of sustainable economic transformation.”
The organisers of the forum want to use the event to encourage the private sector to increase its investments in the green growth sector and especially to establish partnerships with other actors working in this field. They will also discuss environmental challenges and issues in Africa. A thousand participants with various profiles are expected to attend the forum. These include decision makers, experts, investors, researchers and others. The programme is built around round tables on green growth in Africa and Rwanda, a conference on green growth policy in Rwanda as well as thematic workshops and B to B business meetings. A recreational evening, the Rwanda green growth concert and awards, will close the forum.

Green growth in Rwanda, a model for Africa?
The Rwandan government has made green growth a priority in its development project. In 2008, it was the first African country to ban the use of plastic bags in favour of biodegradable bags. Rwanda’s policy in the green economy sector is contained in the Green Growth and resilience climate strategy, launched in 2011. This programme aims to integrate the issue of climate change into all sectors of the national economy. For its implementation, the government has released a fund, the $100 million “green fund”, which has already made it possible to carry out 33 projects.
