The new installation will improve the supply of drinking water in the council of Touba Toul, located in western Senegal. It consists of a 20 m high water tower with a storage capacity of 150 m3. The installation will store water pumped from the water table through a borehole.

The construction of the water tower in Touba Toul was carried out by Senegal’s Office des forages Ruraux (Ofor) at a total cost of 85 million CFA francs, or more than 152,600 euros. “The Touba Toul borehole did not have a water tower, but rather a 30 m3 tank on the ground. With the new installation, the stored drinking water should be sufficient to supply the council as well as the surrounding villages,” explains Seyni Ndao, the general manager of Ofor.

The work carried out in Touba Toul is part of the Rural Water and Sanitation Project (Peamir) launched in 2018 in Senegal. It is financed by the World Bank to the tune of 130 million dollars, including 22 billion dollars for rural water.

At least 1.3 million beneficiaries

According to Ofor, Peamir, which will benefit 1.3 million people, should be completed by the end of June 2023. In the drinking water component, 371 simplified drinking water supply systems will be rehabilitated in the regions of Thiès, Fatick, Diourbel Kaolack and Kaffrine in Senegal. The works will consist of the renewal of water towers; the supply and installation of electromechanical equipment on existing boreholes; the supply and installation of at least 500 metering systems (production and distribution), as well as 600 chlorination systems.

Ofor also plans to build at least 300 km of network extensions and densifications and two new boreholes in the municipality of Tassette; to strengthen storage facilities with the construction of two reservoirs and the rehabilitation of the Yayem water tower; to install drainage equipment; and to lay new large-diameter pipes to allow for the construction of 30,000 social connections.

In February 2021, Ofor launched the connection of 5,000 households in Fatick. In the framework of Peamir, a total of 1,910 households in nine councils of the districts of Niakhar, Ndiob and Tattaguine will benefit from free social connections.
