Less than a year after entering the South African renewable energy market, Magnora has obtained the first permit in the Rainbow Nation. This is an environmental permit issued by South African officials for the development of a 260 MWp solar project. “The environmental clearance means that the project has the majority of the most important permits,” says the Oslo, Norway-based company.
According to Magnora, its solar power plant will be able to produce 600 GWh of clean electricity per year. The location of the project site was not disclosed, but the energy company says that its plant will be built “in an area with extremely good solar radiation, with an expected annual production of more than 2300 kWh/KWp”.

The installation will be equipped with a battery storage system to optimise its output and reduce the intermittency inherent in solar energy production. Norwegian company Magnora is investing in the clean energy project through developer African Green Ventures (AGV), in which it now holds a 92% stake through a deal announced in February 2022.
The developer has already established a strong track record of participating in the South African government’s energy transition strategy for almost a decade. The company has an installed capacity of 800 MW of solar and wind power. AVG has also signed land lease option agreements for new clean energy generation facilities.
