In the energy sector, off-grid refers to a system of electricity generation and distribution that is independent of a national electricity grid. Off-grid solutions distributed in Africa include micro-grids, mini-grids, solar lamps and solar home systems or solar kits. Off-grid has become widely available in sub-Saharan Africa in recent years thanks to private companies. These companies install small wind farms, small hydro or solar power plants and containerised solar systems. These installations are then connected to small distribution grids at the neighbourhood or village level. Off-grid solutions accelerate the electrification of rural areas, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa.
