In Tanzania, the government will be making efforts to finance drinking water in Geita. It has pledged to allocate 4.7 billion Tanzanian shillings (nearly $2 million) to the Rural Water and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) to finance water projects in the district until 2024. This budget represents double the portfolio agreed last year by the Tanzanian government for the same locality, i.e. 2.2 billion Tanzanian shillings, or around 930,500 dollars.

This funding will enable RUWASA to speed up the implementation of projects already under way in the Geita district, in particular the project to drill 13 deep water wells, which is 70% complete. The first eight boreholes are already supplying drinking water to the people of Geita. The installations were carried out using a special drilling vehicle provided by the Tanzanian government through the Tanzania Covid Rescue Fund (TCRF).
At least five districts to benefit
New drinking water projects will also be launched in this Tanzanian district to improve drinking water coverage for people in the districts of Nkome, Katoma, Nyamboge, Nzera and Lwezera. The Tanzanian government is continuing to finance drinking water supplies in several other districts. Between 2022 and 2023, the city of Arusha in the eponymous district received funding of 12.1 billion dollars for drinking water.
This funding has enabled several projects to be accelerated, including the Arusha Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Improvement Project, which will benefit more than 600,000 people when it opens in June 2023.
