In this series launched on the occasion of the 23rd edition of the Africa Energy Forum (AEF) held from 15 to 17 November 2021 in London, UK, AFRIK 21 takes stock of the development of renewable energy in Africa. Without being exhaustive, the report focuses on the issue of financing, renewable energy development policies, the place of solar energy in electrification, the role of green hydrogen in the energy transition and the major role that geothermal energy plays in the diversification of the electricity mix in East Africa. These issues are important at a time when nearly 600 million Africans live without electricity. African countries must combine their electrification ambitions with decarbonisation, a necessity in the face of global warming.
