The implementation of phase III of the Lomé Urban Environment Project (Peul III) is continuing in the capital of Togo. The Greater Lomé Autonomous District (DAGL) in charge of its implementation, has just announced the end of a part of the “sport and development” component. This is the 2nd edition of the call for waste management projects, intended for Togolese sports federations and associations.
The winners were unveiled on 14 September 2022, three months after the launch of the call for projects. They are the Togo National Basketball Federation (FNBT) which is implementing the project “Fight against environmental degradation through basketball” and the Togolese Tchoukball Federation (Fetotchouk) which is implementing the project “Promotion of Tchoukball and citizen involvement in favour of the environment and gender equity”.
AFD funding
The six other winners of the 2nd edition of the call for projects are all associations. They are Jeunesse Wara Sporting Club, Amis du futur (AF), Leading Youth sport and Development (LYSD), Youth Fraternity for Development in Togo (Frajed-Togo), Circle of help woman child (C.A.F.E) and the women sport and development association (FESDEV). They respectively promote projects called “promotion of women’s and girls’ sports practices in the council of Agoè-Nyivé4”, “women’s sport and sustainable development”, “Milédou Lomé, basketball for the environment”, “young girls and footjog’ environment at the centre of development”, “Discover football and environmental protection” and the project “volleyball festival of the three communes and training on the theme of the environment”.
The winners of the call for projects received a grant of 32.5 million CFA francs (over 49,500 euros) from the French Development Agency (AFD) to implement their projects. The bulk of the funds, 23.45 million CFA francs (about 36,000 euros), was divided between the larger associations. The two federations will share the remaining 9.11 million CFA francs (almost 14,000 euros).

The aim is to encourage, through sports activities, good practices for the preservation of the environment. Peul III also includes improving solid waste management and supporting the governance of the DAGL, among others. A first phase of the Peul project was implemented between 2007 and 2013, and a second phase between 2012 and 2019. Peul III is underway since 1 July 2019 and is expected to be completed in 2023.
